Né en 1948, le Festival d’Aix-en-Provence s’est rapidement imposé comme l’un des grands rendez-vous de la saison lyrique. Grand rendez-vous, mais aussi lieu d’innovation et de renouvellement, conscient de la capacité unique qu’ont les festivals à surprendre et à amener le public vers des horizons, des formes, des artistes nouveaux. Dédié à la création de spectacles d’opéra ainsi qu’à l’organisation de concerts de la plus grande qualité, il bénéficie d’une reconnaissance lui permettant de collaborer avec des metteurs en scène à la pointe de leur art, des orchestres et des chefs visionnaires, des distributions de premier ordre et les plus grands compositeurs contemporains. Son image lui permet de nouer des coproductions avec les plus grandes maisons du monde dans lesquelles ses spectacles voyagent au long des saisons. Le Festival international du mois de juillet est précédé d’un prélude, Aix en juin, dédié aux publics locaux, entièrement gratuit à partir de 2020 et qui contribue au fort ancrage territorial, une autre caractéristique du Festival d’Aix. À ceci s’ajoutent le dynamisme de son Académie, aujourd’hui réputée dans le monde entier, la vitalité de ses projets méditerranéens portés par son réseau Medinea et son Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée, et l’impact essentiel des actions de sensibilisation et des projets de création de ses services éducatif et socio-artistique Passerelles, qui accueillent chaque année plus de 5000 participants. L’importance de ces actions Passerelles, Académies, Méditerranée, distinguent le Festival d’Aix des autres festivals d’opéra moins présents sur ces terrains. Depuis 2010 le Festival s’est engagé dans une politique active de développement durable afin de réduire son impact sur l’environnement, avec un accent tout particulier depuis 2014, sur l’éco-conception des décors pour laquelle il est devenu un modèle précurseur rejoint par de nombreuses institutions culturelles régionales, nationales et internationales.
