FIDA Cameroon Overview

FIDA mission and vision is to promote the human rights of women and girls, enhance and promote the welfare of women and children, promote the principles and aims of the United Nations in their legal and social aspects, promote the aims and principles of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and promote the study of comparative law. FIDA Cameroon was registered in Cameroon on the 21st April 1993 with Registration number 1173/G.37/D14/1/VOL.10/580/2AP. Barrister Mrs Marian Weledji started FIDA Cameroon. Her reason for it, was to promote the human rights of women and girls so as to enhance their social status and welfare. Discriminatory laws against women, repugnant customary practices encouraging child marriage and maltreatment of widows, its adverse health effects, and gaps in Cameroon laws were fast reducing women in Cameroon to second class citizens. Also the lack of political will by government to implement ratified treaties that protect women made it imperative for women lawyers to create FIDA Cameroon so as to advocate for equality, social change and promote women’s empowerment. Our national office is in the South West Region of Cameroon and branch office in the North West Region but we execute projects locally and nationally.
