Rhodanthe Lipsett Indigenous Midwifery Charitable Fund Overview

There is an urgent need to increase the number of First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; Indigenous) midwives in Australia. Rhodanthe Lipsett’s (OAM) dream was for all First Nations women to have improved pregnancy and birth outcomes by having the benefit of care from First Nations midwives. By establishing the Rhodanthe Lipsett Indigenous Midwifery Charitable Fund (RLIMCF) we aim to make a contribution to both ‘a better start in life’ and improving the health and well-being of First Nations mothers and babies. Funding First Nations people to become midwives will enable more First Nations women and their families to access community based, culturally appropriate and culturally safe care of their own choosing. The impact of having a First Nations midwife is immeasurable. It can lead to improved pregnancy and birth outcomes, improve rates of breastfeeding through culturally appropriate care and can influence the mother-baby bond in the first few moments after birth. This combined with greater access to midwifery continuity of care, more choices in types of service provisions specifically Birthing on Country and being engaged in their own decision-making while supporting cultural, spiritual and well-being needs of First Nations women and families will make a positive lifelong impact to those families.
