Flock House was established in 1924 as an agricultural vocational training school for orphans of Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine servicemen lost or disabled in World War I. In 1935 it was purchased by the New Zealand government and ran until 1987 as an agricultural training institute, creating careers for many.
