ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. As the cells die, voluntary muscle control and movement dies with them. The disease takes away the ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually the ability to breathe. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. As of today, there is no treatment or cure for this disease that affects 30,000 people a year. The ALS Association’s fight against ALS covers research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy.
FORECADDIES to BEAT ALS was founded by Jerome Vangheluwe, who received his ALS diagnosis in February 2022, and has vowed to make a difference in the lives of all who suffer from this terrible affliction.
Each year, the organization puts on a charity golf outing to raise awareness and funding to help in the fight against ALS. In 2024, $53,000 was raised. The 2025 goal is $100,000.
