As part of the Europaeum Scholars Programme, our team works to improve engagement between citizens, stakeholders, and policy-makers with the purpose of contributing to a transformation of European democracy through processes that are more engaging, celebratory, and ultimately more effective.
Building on one year of research, we have developed a multi-level democratic participation model, the Level Up Toolkit. It can be used for joint decision-making and public consultation.
Our key features:
👫 Physical > Digital: Our model centres around physical encounters with material output. In a world where digital is constant and physical is uncertain, physical encounters have the biggest impact.
🎉 It’s not politics, it’s fun: Our approach emphasises creativity and uses gamification to engage participants. The content is led by “bottom-up” processes which achieve greater relevance, engagement, and impact.
🤝 Equity of understanding: Our process aims to bridge the gaps between participants’ knowledge, culture, and needs. Emphasising empathy and humility, we create a level-playing field for meaningful engagement and communication, both of which are preconditions for high-quality output.
We are currently implementing our toolkit in pilot projects across Europe and foresee its potential integration into structural democratic participation models such as the Conference on the Future of Europe and the Citizens’ Panel envisaged by democracy expert Alberto Alemanno.
