Gap Ministries runs two day care centres - the Joseph Centre and Stepping Stones. Stepping Stones supports children living on the streets and the Joseph Centre focuses on those living on the main municipal garbage dump in Mombasa. Children receive food, showers, can launder their clothes, and have fun. Basic literacy and numeracy is taught and games and recreation are a part of each day. Showing children love and respect along with a disciplined approach helps them to feel secure and accepted. The aims of Stepping Stones is to educate and enable boys to look at their lives and aspire to leave street life. The charity also has one foster home where children live and attend school.
Gap Ministries employs local Kenyans to work in each centre, and the foster parents are a Kenyan couple with two children of their own. This family act as role models for boys in the home which we hope they will replicate when they leave and have families themselves.
