Addressing the increasing need to provide knowledge for decision-making, the German Arctic Office at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research serves as an information and cooperation platform between science, politics and industry.
The office provides a central point of contact for political and scientific bodies, NGOs and German industry, and advises the German Federal Government on Arctic issues through statements and briefings based on the latest research. In this context, it initiates and organizes national Arctic meetings and events in cooperation with partners from science, politics and industry and supports the Federal Government in presenting German Arctic research and policy at international conferences. Hence, it promotes an ongoing dialogue between German Arctic stakeholders and informs them about international Arctic policy strategies and priorities in the global Arctic research community.
The German Arctic Office also promotes German participation in the scientific activities of the Arctic Council and provides scientific organizations with background information on current policy-relevant developments in the Arctic region.
