Ghana is the second-largest producer of raw Cocoa beans in the world. In spite of this enviable position, the country has remained largely, a producer and exporter of raw cocoa, beans for the global economy.
It’s a well known fact that Chocolate, an economically significant by- product of Cocoa is a multi billion dollar industry which has the capacity to push the economic development of Ghana beyond the benefits it’s currently enjoying from the export of raw Cocoa beans. However, until recently, the Cocoa Processing Company, Ghana’s premier bean to bar chocolate manufacturer was the only company manufacturing chocolate for the local and global markets.
Currently, there is a wave of new entrepreneurs including artisanal chocolate makers entering the chocolate market and this is most heart warming. We, however, believe that this is not enough and for that matter more must be done to promote the local manufacturing and consumption of chocolates to enhance the economic, nutritional and entertainment needs of the Ghanian in particular and the world in general.
