The Global Alliance for Communities is a purpose-driven coalition of community-based grassroots organizations.
Our story
The Global Alliance for Communities was borne out of a desire to end bias in the international aid sector. Community-based organizations and proximate leaders of color demonstrate outsized impact, yet are systemically locked out from funding and advancement due to structural and cultural inequities. The status quo of international aid leaves thousands of promising community-embedded leaders on the sidelines, and lasting impact unrealized.
Real and sustained social and economic change will not happen without centering the voices and perspectives of local leaders who have deep experience and rich first-hand knowledge about the communities they live and work in every day.
The Global Alliance for Communities is currently being incubated at Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), the largest grassroots organization in Kenya. SHOFCO’s Founder and CEO, Kennedy Odede, experienced the challenges of being a leader of color first-hand when he launched SHOFCO. He often found he was held to higher standards than his white or ex-pat counterparts and that funders and saw peer leaders of color experience similar challenges.
Kennedy helped launch the Global Alliance for Communities to confront these biases and unlock the untapped potential of innovative community-based organizations.
The Global Alliance for Communities is a first-of-its kind coalition advocating for wholesale change in development, urging funders and international donors to place power in the hands of local organizations so they can execute the programs and initiatives they know will work.
