Global Village Bard's core mission is to "re-enchant the global village". This mission is born from a recognition that, as the world becomes ever more closely interconnected, it risks losing the vibrancy of its cultural communication. Global Village Bard sets out to restore that vibrancy by reimagining the role of the village bard in a global context. It structures bicultural, bilingual and – where appropriate – binational collaborations around the core activity of translating songs from one language/culture to another and performing them in both languages in the context of cross-cultural events. This is an essentially collaborative, multidisciplinary project involving singers, songwriters, translators, musicians, poets and painters. Global Village Bard's main current project is the production of the bilingual collaborative album series 'Voices from Russia | Golosa Nyetumannovo Albiona'. Volume 1: Burns & Vysotsky: Free Form Translations, released on 25 January 2014, presents new English translations of songs by Vladimir Vysotsky alongside new Russian translations of songs by Robert Burns. Volume 2: Saints & Sinners | Svyatiye i Greshniki will present completely new songs written and translated in partnership with collaborators in Russia and based on paintings by Scottish and Russian artists. Volume 3: The Bard is not Dead! | Zhiv Poet! will present English and Russian versions of songs based on texts by the Scottish poet-prophet Thomas the Rhymer and his descendent, the Russian poet, MY Lermontov.
