The Integrative Microbiology Group (GMI) is part of the Structural and Molecular Biology Laboratory (BEM) at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Chile. We are dedicated to advanced research on microorganisms in extreme conditions, exploring the mechanisms that allow them to survive and adapt to hostile environments such as Antarctica, highly saline areas, or extreme temperatures. Our focus includes the study of extremophiles to understand their molecular resistance strategies and their biotechnological potential.
In parallel, we investigate antimicrobial resistance processes in bacteria, with a special emphasis on the identification and characterization of genes that confer resistance to antibiotics. This work contributes to the global fight against resistant infections by developing new therapeutic strategies.
Additionally, we delve into microbial pathogenesis, analyzing how different microorganisms colonize, invade, and damage their hosts in order to identify virulence factors.
Our work integrates techniques from microbiology, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to generate knowledge relevant to basic science.
