Greater Melbourne Overview

Melbourne is one of the world’s most exciting and liveable cities but faces many challenges. This website aims to contribute to debates about the conditions and processes shaping Melbourne and the policies and practices needed to respond to these changes. In 2021 the pandemic looms large, but longer term issues of accommodating population growth, enabling sustainable livelihoods, ensuring housing affordability, transitioning away from private car dependency, decarbonising energy, treaty engagement, infrastructure financing and provision, conserving and enriching biodiversity, and securing health and wellbeing for urban residents, remain pressing concerns, among many others. This website takes the view that better urban planning can help Melbourne respond to its challenges. Yet planning discussions are often lost in the media landscape. Greater Melbourne has been founded by a group of engaged observers keen to offer provocative, imaginative and impactful analysis and conversation to shape our city’s future. Greater Melbourne will explore five areas across practice and research, to: I. Foster informed, evidence-based conversations regarding Melbourne’s development. II. Connect evidence from research, planning practice and community voices to accessible and rigorous discussions about Melbourne’s future. III. Analyse and discuss planning issues as they occur, framed by deeper explorations of new possibilities for a Greater Melbourne. IV. Communicate the work of progressive researchers, planners and advocates seeking to generate positive change in Melbourne’s planning. VI. Support progressive and imaginative planning with resources and information.
