My name is Sam, I am an ex-police officer who left policing in 2019 due to a decline in my mental health caused by trauma in the job. Since leaving I have created Green Ribbon Policing which campaigns to get better mental health welfare and support for all police officers in the UK.
I want a mandatory national standard for mental health in policing so all police officers and staff get a high quality of care. I want a 360 approach to mental health support which includes prevention/education, maintained resilience, and after care.
There has been improvements to officer welfare but unfortunately none of it is mandatory or consistent. Officers across the country are getting different levels of support. Mental health is said to be the biggest killer of police officers in this country and 1 in 5 police officers develop PTSD, it is estimated that a police officer takes their own life every 2 weeks.
I want it to be made mandatory for all forces to record police suicides and suicidal ideations so that the data can hold welbeing provisions accountable.
