גרינפיס הינו הארגון הגדול והוותיק בעולם להגנת הסביבה הפועל ללא מטרות רווח. אנו פועלים בדרכים לא אלימות ויצירתיות על מנת לחשוף בעיות סביבתיות עולמיות ואת הגורמים להן, ולקדם פתרונות חלופיים למען עתיד ירוק וטוב יותר.
גרינפיס מחויב לעקרונות אי האלימות, אי התלות הפוליטית והבינלאומיות (שיתוף פעולה בין מדינות). בניסיונות ובמאמצים למציאת פתרון לבעיות הסביבה, טובת הסביבה היא העומדת לנגד עינינו.
אם היה גרינפיס מעורב אי פעם באלימות כלשהי, היה זה רק בעמדת הקורבן; ב – 1985 עגנה ספינת גרינפיס "Rainbow Warrior" באוקלנד, ניו זילנד, ומחתה נגד ניסויים גרעיניים שביצעה צרפת באזור דרום האוקיינוס הפסיפי. על פי הוראה רשמית של ממשלת צרפת, פוצצו כוחות צרפתיים את הספינה וגרמו למותו של אחד מאנשי הצוות שהיו עליה. זו אחת הדוגמאות המזעזעות ביותר לאלימות שהופנתה כלפי גרינפיס ולמרבה הצער, זו אינה הדוגמא היחידה.
