The Gujarat Power Research & Development (GPRD) Cell, established by the Government of Gujarat under Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL), serves as a dedicated research center to advance the state’s power sector. Supporting GUVNL and its subsidiaries—GSECL (generation), GETCO (transmission), and the distribution companies DGVCL, MGVCL, UGVCL, and PGVCL—the Cell drives innovation and development across the electricity value chain.
Recognizing that sustained success in the power sector hinges on robust R&D efforts, GPRD was created as an independent unit equipped with modern infrastructure and staffed by skilled engineers selected through a rigorous process from GUVNL subsidiaries. The Cell’s work focuses on enhancing material designs, improving network efficiency and safety, promoting automation and IT applications, advancing renewable energy integration, exploring energy storage solutions, and supporting emerging technologies like Electric Vehicles.
Operating under the guidance of a multi-tiered committee chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat, GPRD ensures strategic oversight and alignment with state energy goals.
Since its inception on April 29, 2016, and relocation to the IIT Gandhinagar Research Park in 2017, the Cell has been advancing research with a dedicated team of 13 scientists. GPRD is committed to pioneering pilot projects and innovations that propel Gujarat’s power sector toward a sustainable and efficient future
