Harold Sutherland's career in construction began in 1960 when he was just 16 years old. His first job was hauling gravel in a 1938 Chev. Maple Leaf Truck to neighbouring properties from his father's farm. Two years later, Harold Sutherland purchased a 1957 John Deere Track Loader which was frequently used on various jobsites. He continued to pursue different projects like Township and Municipality work, hauling gravel and supplying various types of material to builders working on new homes. His first staff member was hired in 1969 - a man who remains with the company today, 41 years later. In 1983, Harold Sutherland Construction Ltd.'s biggest accomplishment was achieved. An application was made to the Niagara Escarpment Commission requesting approval to operate a licensed quarry in the former Township of Keppel. Six years later, the licence application was approved and the gates at the Keppel Quarry were opened. Over the years, Harold Sutherland has gained a solid reputation in construction and aggregate excellency. Municipal and Ministry of Transportation highway jobs, sewer and water main projects, and hot mix asphalt tasks are few of the many types of work that Harold Sutherland Construction Ltd. involves itself in. Today, the company operates 4 licensed quarries and 15 licensed pits throughout Grey and Bruce Counties. Most importantly, the great dedication, hard work and support of employees and colleagues has enabled the company to grow and succeed year after year - this is the greatest attribute towards the success of the company. The number of employees has grown to over 200. Harold Sutherland and his company can always be seen working hard to improve area roadways and residential areas each and every day. And after 50 years in business, the site of green trucks on Municipal roadways has become a natural familiarity to the residents of Grey and Bruce Counties.
