Anyone can buy a present, but gifting is an art. It’s intuition, a sixth
sense. It’s the confidence that a surprise will be met with a smile. The
art of gifting is about anticipating your friends’ aspirations. What do
they long for? Who do they dream of being? What will serve them well?
The best gift-givers I’ve known give a part of themselves with every gift.
They give what they’ve enjoyed or wish someone had given them. That’s
why this collection is so personal for me. Every item is something I’ve
used or have wanted when a situation’s gone sideways – or FUBAR, as we
used to say in the service.
Men’s gifts today have become so mundane, like we’ve forgotten what
it means to be a man. A good gift needs to be authentic, timeless,
purposeful and even romantic. I’m talking about the romance of solo
travel, spy novels and a John Wayne western. A good gift combines
practicality with possibility – much like our gifts pictured at right.

A favorite rowing coach once told me that if you can be these three
