Herdade do Portocarro is one of the most singular wine projects in Portugal. Close to the Atlantic, halfway between the Setúbal Peninsula and the Alentejo region, this 142 ha property with a 18 ha vineyard produces wines in a territory where no other wine projects have been attempted. Its owner and winemaker, José da Mota Capitão, influenced and inspired by biodynamic viticulture, is trying to recover extinct indigenous grapes as well as experiment with the classic Portuguese varieties, producing wines with a unique and innovative touch and character. Nominated 2015 producer of the year by the most widely read Portuguese wine magazine “Essência do Vinho”, Herdade do Portocarro winery is always rated among the top wine producers in Portugal.
