The history of the HKIE Nuclear Division dates back to 1985 when the Division was originally formed as an Engineering Group of HKIE. It was at a time when the people of Hong Kong expressed their concern at the construction of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station after the Chernobyl nuclear accident which occurred on 26 April 1986. At that time, the Institution had lived up to its expectations to advise the Government and the public on the engineering issues related to the nuclear power station. Following an amendment to the HKIE Constitution at a Special General Meeting in June 1987, the Nuclear Division was formally established with effect from January 1988. The primary goal of the Nuclear Division is to promote the exchange of information and ideas on nuclear engineering.
