I started experimenting with skincare for the sake of my own sensitive, damaged skin. I had no experience with things like cosmetics or formulas, and frankly I distrusted retail products because of how my skin always reacted, no matter how harmless the ingredients lists looked. My ensuing research into natural skincare revealed a conventional wisdom across the entire industry, from major research institutes to the small-batch, natural DIY space: Some chemicals you simply can't go without when it comes to emulsified formulas like lotions. For the sake of texture, absorption, appearance, fragrance - and then to improve stability after all those other adjustments - synthetic or isolated compounds must be used.
It was to my advantage that I was willing to ignore this conventional "wisdom" and try an all-natural formula anyway, one of my own making since I couldn't find any anywhere! I didn't have business or customers in mind, and I couldn't have cared less about texture or appearance. All I cared about was having a lotion and lip balm which would help my skin. I would use only the best, most nourishing natural ingredients.
Apparently I came across unicorns. As soon as I made them, friends and family who tried them asked me to make more. They then reported back that I should make even more, since I would have orders coming in.
