An innovative model of sustainable and long-lasting transformation in one of the poorest areas of the world. We build new houses for families living in extreme vulnerability (almost 100 houses already delivered) in addition to partnerships with schools, but most importantly, generate jobs, promoting education and capacitating the locals with professional training in the construction trade as bricklayers and masters.
We founded an eco-brick factory (lower-cost bricks/blocks and superior technology vs conventional ones) to invest in training locals who did not have any professional qualification or educational opportunities. People with no job prospects now work on building their own homes and those of many other families, creating a multiplier effect for the community. With this, the Institute provides them with conditions for professional work and stable employment, something unthinkable until then.
Context:
Mozambique is the 5th poorest country in the world, according to official reports from international organizations IMF, UN, Forbes. Since 2019, it has been severely affected by Idai Cyclone, considered by the UN to be one of the worst calamities in the Southern Hemisphere in centuries, affecting millions of people and leaving a trail of destruction and misery, with hundreds of thousands of families who lost everything and were left homeless, without access to drinking water and living in the rubble in subhuman conditions. The disaster worsened the situation and made it even more critical in the central region of the country (Beira), which every year faces calamities caused by cyclones and floods.
In 2019, Tarik Mohallem and his family decided to take a 1-year break from my career as corporate executive to move to Africa and serve in the areas devastated by the cyclone, that's when the Hope for Mozambique Institute was born and has been growing exponentially ever since.
