The HyBioComBone project aims to develop novel biomimetic macroporous composites with multifunctional properties for bone repair, regeneration, and cancer treatment. Novel macroporous composites with adequate mechanical strength and tuned biodegradability will be designed by an interdisciplinary step-by-step approach combining the interpenetrating network hydrogels, inorganic nanostructured bioglasses, and multi-ion doped calcium phosphates. Optimized composites will be further developed in three directions: i) as carriers for the extracellular vesicles derived from adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) providing improved osteointegration and bone tissue regeneration; ii) for loading and controlled delivery of commercial and newly synthesized antiproliferative drug providing novel cancer treatment, and iii) for loading and controlled delivery of antibiotics to fight infection. Since LBDs are one of the most demanding orthopedic conditions with more than 2 million bone grafts performed worldwide annually, the impact of the HyBioComBone project is expected to be immense including the benefit of society, afflicted individuals, and the healthcare sector. The innovative solutions for bone regeneration and cancer treatment can be further implemented in clinical trials and improve the well-being of patients as well as to reduce the costs of the treatments. Our versatile approach, which involves collaboration between experts in the field of material engineering and medicine would put us in an excellent position to obtain a successful project result – novel hybrid composites with both regeneration and therapeutic effects.
