At Hylo Ag, we want to solve common problems. The first on our list is the issue of rural communities lacking infrastructure and processes to recycle farm plastics.
We've set our sights on the 15,000 tonnes of plastic that the Australian Livestock industry produces on farm every year. Visual and electronic ear tags are vital for biosecurity and traceability, but have you ever wondered where all those little plastic pieces end up after sheep and cattle have left our properties?
With over 2M head of cattle produced every year, and our national sheep and lamb slaughter averaging 25M head, a HUGE volume of 5-10 gram plastic ear tags are involved in our supply chain.
We aim to develop a business model that facilitates collection of waste ear tags at the end of their life, and re-directs them to a partnering recycler who helps us to create new items from the recovered plastic feedstock.
Not only do we grant access to such a service, we also track your impact with our Hylo Ag app, similar to an online banking app. Users send us ear tags, we keep record of the volume of plastic diverted from landfill, making it extremely easy to report and share.
As the adage goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure!
