The IAS (Institute of African Studies) is the central coordination point for the Africa and African diaspora focus at the University of Bayreuth. It plays a key role in the organisation and coordination of research and teaching in these areas. It also promotes interdisciplinary research projects and specifically supports applications for third-party funding that relate to topics concerning Africa and the African diaspora. The IAS places a strong focus on promoting cooperation with African universities and research institutions as well as with organisations that are active in the widely dispersed African diaspora.
In addition, the IAS acts as an institutional centre for all Africa-related institutions at the University of Bayreuth. These include the Iwalewahaus, the Cluster of Excellence ‘Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies’ and the Research Centre for Society, Technology, and Ecology in Africa – Challenges of the 21st Century (FZA). These institutions join forces to strengthen and further develop African and diaspora research at the university.
