Belgium has a history full of blurring borders, battles over boundaries, and consequent shifts in local land and culture. Perhaps, its geographic location ignites an inherent interest in cartography. For centuries, Belgium has built a reputation for its magnificent maps, but in today’s satellite world, is there a place for old-fashioned Flemish cartography in the world of modern crafts?
Stefan Ceulemans certainly thinks so. The latest in the line of outstanding Flemish cartographers, Stefan is a firm believer in the artistic and cultural merit of maps. In 1997 Mr. Ceulemans father was approached by the state of Israel to create an art-map series of Jerusalem in honor of the 50 year anniversary of the Israeli State.
The series took over three years to complete, and it received international attention while being promoted by the National Geographic Society.
