Professional development and skills training in Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA) focuses on disciplinary specialisations and the pursuit of increasingly scarce academic positions. This approach results in a discrepancy between students' academic-focused skillsets and the requirements of actual employment prospects which are more likely to reside in non-academic workplaces. This jeopardizes the future of SSHA students as productive, skilled workers and knowledgeable, engaged contributors to society. There are also risks for universities, as SSHA programs witness drops in enrollment, public perception of irrelevance and insufficient capacity for social impact. At the same time, Social Service Organisations (SSOs) often do not have the resources, time or networks to fill training gaps or access academic SSHA expertise. Over 6 years, our Talent Partnership will launch a unique program co-designed and co-delivered by SSOs and academic partners. It is built on three objectives: 1) Equip SSHA students with transversal skills that boost their employability outside of academia; 2) Design a new experiential learning approach that supports SSHA students in applying their academic skills to projects that increase capacity for innovation among SSOs; and 3) Establish communication platforms that highlight the value of SSHA talent to social innovation.
