As the world faces an ever-present flu pandemic threat, a global consortium has produced the world’s first global roadmap to accelerate the development of improved seasonal and universal influenza vaccines.
The Influenza Vaccines Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap (IVR) shows us how we can leverage a wide array of new advances in vaccine science and technology—including those used to develop COVID-19 vaccines—to usher in a new era of influenza vaccines to better protect us all against the disease.
The Wellcome Trust supported an international consensus-building effort to develop the IVR. The project was coordinated by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, in partnership with a Steering Group, including representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), Wellcome Trust, the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Task Force for Global Health, and an international taskforce of subject-matter experts. The project engaged more than 100 stakeholder organizations—representing public and private sector perspectives from 29 countries across the globe—in extensive consultations and public review of draft roadmap documents, working in partnership.
The roadmap lays out a detailed, ten-year plan to achieve two significant goals:
Improve the production and effectiveness of strain-specific seasonal vaccines.
Advance the development, licensure and production of universal influenza vaccines.
If we embrace the roadmap, we could tame seasonal epidemics and prevent or rapidly mitigate a potentially devastating pandemic.
