INSPIRE Project: Driving Innovation in Offshore Wind and Hydrogen The INSPIRE project, part of the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership and funded by Horizon Europe, is focused on advancing offshore wind and hydrogen production by integrating cutting-edge design with resource efficiency. In collaboration with academic partners from Norway (NTNU), Belgium (VUB), and industrial and academic partners from Germany (Fraunhofer IWES, Siemens, UOB), INSPIRE seeks to reduce rare earth element (REE) usage while optimizing the overall performance and lifespan of renewable energy systems. INSPIRE’s core focus is on creating next-generation wind turbines and hydrogen production systems that achieve up to 100% REE reduction in hydrogen production and a 30% reduction in REEs used in offshore wind turbines. Leveraging AI-driven design methodologies, the project improves operational performance by optimizing component efficiency and extending system lifecycles, reducing both costs and environmental impacts. These innovations in system design are set to streamline energy conversion and enhance power output, positioning Europe at the forefront of clean energy technology. Key objectives: - AI-powered optimization for efficiency, system longevity, and performance - Open-access designs to promote the widespread deployment of green hydrogen systems - Development of policy and industry roadmaps for seamless integration To ensure practical implementation, INSPIRE will validate its solutions through two real-world case studies: a 675 MW Green Hydrogen Farm and an on-grid hydrogen system based on the Belgian offshore wind cluster, aiming for TRL 4-5 readiness. By innovating on both mechanical and electrical components, INSPIRE will enhance Europe’s renewable energy sector, contributing to reduced costs, greater sustainability, and improved resilience.
