The Institut Botànic de Barcelona (IBB, Botanical Institute of Barcelona in English) is a joint research centre between the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona Consortium (MCNB), established in 1934. Over the years, IBB has evolved, becoming an associated centre in 1986 and a joint research centre with the City Council in 1998.
As the second-largest botanical research centre in Spain, IBB is renowned for both its scientific impact and the extensive volume of its collections. It houses approximately 800,000 herbarium specimens and offers access to these collections through the CSIC Library Network, available to researchers worldwide.
IBB conducts cutting-edge research through four main research lines: Biodiversity and Plant Evolution, Vegetal Diversity, Genome Evolution and Ethnobotany, Native and Alien Flora (diversity, collections, and conservation), and Entomology and Insect-Plant Interactions.
IBB is home to the Salvador Cabinet, one of the last remaining naturalist collections from the Enlightenment period. This collection, which includes fossils, shells, seeds, and various other specimens, is part of the Natural Science Museums Network of Catalonia (XMCNC) and is open to the public. The Institute also possesses a remarkable scientific, medical, and pharmaceutical library from the 16th to 18th centuries, recognized as one of the most important of its kind globally.
