Institute International Trendscouting at HAWK Overview

In the field of colour design/colour and surface design, which is unique in Europe, the IIT Institute is involved in future and trend research as well as design and collection development with a focus on colour for architecture and products for industry and trade. The Institute International Trendscouting IIT was founded in 2004 at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim. As an association of experts, the IIT at the HAWK has set itself the goal of recording design-relevant developments and trends, developing observation models and methods of design research in order to be able to formulate and visualise well-founded forecasts and scenarios for desirable futures. In recent years, futurology and trend research in design and architecture in Europe has developed from a minor activity to an important marketing instrument. How can knowledge about the future be generated when it lies outside our sphere of experience? The future is not available as an object of scientific research. The future and design research of the IIT-HAWK is based on epistemological research-immanent data of the past and present. "Future needs origin" - epochal colour and material cycles, regular trend scouting and the application of specially developed observation models of design research are essential pillars of our work. Early technology identification and impact assessment, Delphi expert surveys and discourse analysis accompany our processes.
