Alvin J. Silk is Lincoln Filene Professor of Business Administration Emeritus at the Harvard Business School. His research interests are in the economics of the advertising and marketing services industry, the development and management of advertising campaigns, and decision support systems in marketing. In recent years, Professor Silk has written extensively about the advertising industry, focusing in particular on the rise of internal advertising agencies.
Birger Wernerfelt is the J. C. Penney Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His research interests lie in the intersection between economics, marketing, and strategic management. In recent years, Professor Wernerfelt has written extensively on the theory of the firm, focusing in particular on the choice between in- and out-sourcing of services.
In their research project on firms’ use of Internal Advertising Agencies, Professors Silk and Wernerfelt seek to identify, characterize, and understand best practices in the area. To shed light on as many factors as possible, the researchers are hoping to gather data from a diverse set of advertisers. To be able to pool this information, it has been necessary to narrow the focus to three functions (Creative, Production, and Media Buying) in three media (Digital, Print, and Video).
Since the questionnaire is targeted at senior marketing managers, it is kept very short and should take no longer than five minutes to complete. No individual and no firm will be identified in any part of the research, and only very aggregate statistics will be published.
