IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) is a membership Union of government and civil society organisations. Together, we work to advance sustainable development and create a just world that values and conserves nature.
Natural and mixed World Heritage sites represent the most significant and outstanding places, protecting species, ecosystems and geodiversity globally, and cover almost 10% of all protected areas. Since the inception of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, IUCN has played an integral role in the recognition and protection of these areas as the technical advisory body on nature.
The IUCN works to promote a science-driven, human-rights based and Union-wide approach to World Heritage from our evaluation of all new natural and mixed World Heritage sites and monitoring the state of conservation of existing world heritage sites to building capacity for the long-term protection of these sites.
IUCN also works more broadly to support World Heritage sites, and other internationally designated areas, on the ground from direct conservation action and programs highlighting the linkages between nature and culture, to advocating for fair, just and equitably governed processes.
