JL Rohatgi Hospital and Dr. Jawahar Lal Rohatgi Memorial Eye Hospital are one among the largest and the oldest non-profit hospitals, and training institute for ophthalmology in the Kanpur region.
The eye hospital was established as a unit of the 'Association for the Prevention of Blindness', Uttar Pradesh (UP), which was founded in Kanpur in 1946 with the mission to eradicate avoidable blindness in UP. Subsequently, an eye hospital was established in 1959 under the name of Kanpur Eye Hospital, which was later renamed as Dr. Jawahar Lal Rohatgi Memorial Eye Hospital. At present, the hospital's innovative eye care delivery system is recognized as a model for other developing eye hospitals.
