The Joint Unit for Waste Crime (JUWC) launched in January 2020. Our aspiration is to:
- Reduce the impact of serious and organised crime in the UK waste industry,
- Protect the economy, environment, and communities that are at risk from waste criminals
We work collaboratively with our broader network of partners, who have an involvement in tackling serious and organised crime in the UK waste industry. We target criminals engaged in serious and organised crime affecting the UK waste industry where our intelligence indicates a multi-agency response would be the most effective.
We are intelligence led in our approach both to help us understand the criminals involved in the waste industry and to ensure we deploy our resources where we will have the biggest impact. This work has allowed our intelligence picture to develop, and we have a better understanding than ever before on how different types of criminality facilitate each other.
Our approach is that of a true partnership. It does not matter which agency gets the final result; our aim is to make the waste industry a difficult place for criminals to operate through whatever means possible.
The JUWC aims to be innovative in our approach. Alongside traditional enforcement action and interventions we are encouraging innovation and the new use of new tools and techniques. We are utilising powers across all JUWC partners to have the maximum impact on criminals exploiting the waste industry.
