Joseph's House was founded in 1990 as a hospice home for individuals dying from AIDS. Today, Joseph's House provides compassionate and holistic respite and hospice care for unhoused individuals living with HIV/AIDS and cancer. Located in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC, Joseph's House mission is centered on community. We seek to bridge the wide health disparities of care our residents have received as unhoused individuals, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community. As one of the only dedicated respite centers in Washington, DC, we provide a unique level of intensive and personal care that does not exist elsewhere. We do not charge residents for services, nor do we bill insurance. Joseph’s House sits at the cross-section of interdisciplinary care: medical, social case management, psychosocial support, and nonmedical daily living assistance. Residents leave Joseph’s House medically stabilized and on the path to financial and housing stability. Support doesn’t stop when residents leave Joseph’s House, but instead continues as residents transition into community members. If on hospice from a terminal illness, Joseph’s House honors individuals by providing them with dignity in dying and death.
