The rising death toll from the opioid epidemic is well-publicized and significant attention is being focused on how to address the issue. What is not well-publicized is a lesser known but equally concerning subset of the epidemic - the growing number of deaths related to combining opioids with other drugs – especially benzodiazepines. In August 2018, the CDC Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report published a study showing that over 50% of prescription opioid deaths also involved a benzodiazepine.
The JP Opioid Interaction Awareness Alliance is working to keep the conversation about the dangers of mixing opioids with benzos in the public domain. We believe that by focusing on interactions with individuals, with community groups, with legislators and with the media, we can raise awareness about the dangers of taking opioids with other medications and help save lives, one interaction at a time.
