Kelp forests cover a third of the world’s coastlines and support hundreds of millions of people, but they are disappearing.
The Kelp Forest Alliance is a knowledge driven not for profit that advances the preservation and restoration of the world’s kelp forests. We conduct targeted research into how to increase connections to kelp forests, prevent kelp forest loss, and how to bring it back once it is gone. Further, we bring together information, persons, and organizations working on kelp forest ecosystems around the globe to create a community of practice which learns and shares information across cultural, professional, and linguistic boundaries. This community currently hosts 600 people from 320 organisations from 25 countries around the world.
We are a supporting member of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, have represented kelp forests at global events such as COP28 for the UNFCCC, COP16 for the CBD, and The UN Ocean Conference.
