KfW Development Bank opened its office in Dar es Salaam in 2000, further expanding Germany’s relations and cooperation with Tanzania. Since the first financial cooperation in 1962, KfW has been supporting the Government of Tanzania on behalf of the German Federal Government with grants for key development programmes all over mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. In addition, our office in Dar es Salaam is responsible for managing our projects with the East African Community (EAC), a close partner since the beginning of our cooperation in 1998.
Currently, our focal sectors in Tanzania are Water and Sanitation, Health and Biodiversity in numerous, geographically and thematically diverse projects. Projects in the Water Sector include, among others, the Simiyu Climate Resilience Project, co-funded by the Green Climate Fund, or the 7 Towns Urban Upgrading Programme, that promotes the population’s water and sanitation supply in mid-sized towns. In 2023, with support from KfW and other donors, the CCBRT Hospital, a specialized maternity and newborn clinic, was inaugurated in Dar es Salaam. To preserve Tanzania’s unparalleled biodiversity, KfW supports several UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Sites, including the Serengeti, Katavi Mahale and Julius Nyerere ecosystems.
Similarly, our cooperation with the EAC focuses on health, education and economic development.
