A non-profit organization that empowers children, aged 6-17, living in rural communities/slums in Nigeria with Leadership and STEM skills, to combat plastic pollution and climate change in their local communities and the world at large.
At Kids in LET, we organize STEM Workshops at schools/communities where we sensitize participants on the importance of environmental protection, the adverse effects of plastic pollution in their environment and most important, we teach them sustainable ways to recycle plastic wastes found in their homes and community, instilling values of environmental consciousness in them at a young age.
They hands-on learn to build functional reading lamps from plastic bottles, batteries and other electronic components readily found in their environment and are introduced to the basic concepts of robotics. With the erratic supply of electricity in some of these communities, these reading lamps serve as a lifeline for the students and their families during the night time.
We also teach them the ropes of generating electricity via wind energy. Using easy-to-purchase materials, they build mini-projects that can power the bulbs of a small home.
The impact has been huge. Post-workshop surveys showed that over 80% of participants became more conscious of their impact on the environment and the importance for proper disposal of waste. It was also apparent the increased creativity and enthusiasm of the children to turn plastic waste into useful end products.
To ensure sustainability, we implemented a peer-to-peer monitoring system where every participant guides and corrects the environmental practises of each other, and other adult individuals in their environment.
With these, our goal is to instill a culture of environmental awareness and protection in these children and make them leaders who'll not only make a change, but also inspire others to do the same.
