In 1862 heeft Derk Kluin zich gevestigd in Meppel aan de oude Haagenstraat. Als goud en zilversmid maakte hij brillen in opdracht van de klant.
Hendrik
Zijn zoon Hendrik volgde, zoals dat vaak ging in die tijd, zijn vader op in hetzelfde pand, rond 1890. Piet Kluin, zijn zoon kwam als 14 jarige al in het bedrijf en kocht in 1942 het huidige pand aan de hoofdstraat.
Na de studie goud en zilversmeden en de opleiding voor opticien nam zijn zoon Klaas Kluin het bedrijf over in 1974, waarna hij zich ging specialiseren in alleen optiek en het juweliersgedeelte verdween uit de zaak.
Na zijn overlijden in 1998 zette zoon Peter het bedrijf voort met zijn moeder. Toen bezig met de opleiding optometrie in Utrecht welke hij met succes afrondde in 2002.
