Konkussion was founded to address the dire need in the areas of diagnostic and therapeutic research, awareness, education, and clinical management of concussion; the primary goal of which was never for pro t, but to provide appropriate care and advance the field of concussion research. The primary purpose of the five divisions of Konkussion is to develop objective measures of diagnosis and prognostication, standardization of management comprising of effective treatments and overall improvement in the quality of life of patients experiencing this challenging condition. The five divisions are: - Clinical Management - The Institute of Education - The Konkussion Retreat (Conference) - Current Research: Concussion (Medical Journal) - Research & Development To address the lack of timely, accessible care for patients with concussions, we have developed a model clinical management program that is available ‘24/7/365’. Immediately following a suspected concussion, an athlete, parent, coach, trainer or worker may avail this facility and ensure that the injured individual is immediately counseled and placed on an evidence-based program for recovery. The importance of ‘24/7/365’ access to care is to ensure early recognition and diagnosis, prevent further injury, and promote early as well as safe return to play, school and work. A concussion may be as serious as a heart attack or stroke if poorly managed, resulting in irreversible brain damage. Our preliminary data with this model of care have shown improved outcomes. To address the lack of standardization in the management of concussions among various practitioners, we have developed the Institute of Education (Toronto, Ontario). The institute comprises a faculty of global experts and researchers in the area of traumatic brain injury and offers a course (with both didactic and practical components) for practitioners to be trained in evidence-based guidelines in the management of concussions. The curriculum of this course is dynamic and is constantly updated based on a rigorous review and critical appraisal of emerging evidence. Our impetus for founding the international peer-reviewed Journal dedicated to concussions was to bridge the gap between concussion awareness and knowledge. The Editorial Board of Current Research: Concussion strives to provide a medium for researchers around the world to share their work and for practitioners to remain on the cut- ting edge of management. The Journal is based on the principles of collaboration in both clinical management and research, in addition to the critical appraisal of data. To foster global collaboration, Konkussion hosted an international concussion conference of global experts with a vested interest in concussion. This conference resulted in a landmark white paper publication paving the path for future work in the field of concussion. The conference leveraged technology to publish, disseminate and implement these guidelines in a short time frame, thus markedly expediting the process of knowledge translation. To address the lack of rigorously controlled trials and critically appraised data, we have established a Research & Development division. Our research focuses on identifying objective measures of diagnosis and effective treatment protocols.
