L'Arhce Cape Breton is a rural community of people with and without intellectual disabilities, valuing a simple life, authentic relationships, and solidarity. Here in Cape Breton, L’Arche operates six homes for 25 men and women with disabilities, as well as 25 28 live-in House Assistants who support them. As we believe that the fundamental rights of each person include the rights to life, to care, to a home, to education, and to work, we seek to create opportunities for employment, skill development, and integration into the wider community for men and women with intellectual disabilities. Our Day Programs provide work opportunities for all our residents, as well as numerous individuals with disabilities who live with their families or with other service providers. These programs include a craft studio, two used clothing stores, a bakery and cafe, a summer day camp for youth, and an organic garden. These programs are widely recognized as some of the best employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Cape Breton.
