L'Atelier des Griots is an international non-profit studio based in Cotonou, Benin (West Africa) that promotes community development and social change through the revitalization and renewal of vital cultural public spaces.
As an international living laboratory, l'Atelier is dedicated on the one hand to the study and implementation of ecological Urbanism, Architecture, Design and Art in Africa, this through an implication and community participation; and on the other hand to the study and promotion of local African construction cultures qualified as informal urbanism.
L'Atelier’s primary mission is to improve the quality of life for citizens and produce life-affirming transformations in the community through dedicated community planning, design and development; youth mentorship, active participation, and technical training, to develop human relationships that lay the foundation for successful community efforts on many levels.
L’Atelier focuses on co-creation, co-construction and co-maintenance with local beneficiary communities, based on strong ecological values, vectors of sustainable development. By placing the community at the heart of the projects, the organization embodies strong values that create a bond of trust with the beneficiaries in order to benefit from their knowledge and know-how.
L'Atelier has established relationships with the European Union Delegation in Benin, the US Embassy in Benin, Sèmè City, the Cabinet Architecture du Soleil, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Africa Design School, L'Ecole de design Nantes Atlantique, l'Ecole Boulle Paris among many international universities, local institutions and leaders.
L'Atelier des Griots is dedicated to the West African tradition of the griot, telling witty stories that celebrate culture, generate self-realization and spark civic engagement through urban planning, architecture, design , art and several other mediums. It tells stories about humanity, people, places and community.
