The Samuels Family LA-HIP Overview

The Samuels Family Latino & African American High School Internship Program, better known as LA-HIP, is a biomedical research training and college preparatory program at the Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). The mission of the program is “To inspire change and self-determination by igniting a passion for scientific discovery”. The program was established in 2006 and 170 dedicated senior high school students from greater Los Angeles have since participated. They performed modern laboratory experiments relevant to pediatric illnesses (i.e., regenerative medicine, cancer and blood diseases, endocrine illnesses and neuroscience) normally not learned until graduate school. Students also participated in SAT preparatory classes as well as in workshops teaching about the complex process of college and financial aid application. With all these activities the program LA-HIP is now a year-long training program. All of the LA-HIP students matriculated to college upon graduation from high school. If you want to learn more about the program, please visit CHLA.org/LAHIP.
