Le Boulevardier is a new small bar for lovers of urban living and an urbane life opening soon in Sydney. We are creating the perfect place where, in the true spirit of a Parisien boulevardier, men and women about town can end a busy day, relax before dinner or cap off the perfect evening, in the midst of the beauty of the bustling city, and with our blend of old-world service, expert mixology, and cool beats.
In French, "un boulevardier" is, literally, a frequenter of the Parisien boulevards, or more broadly, a "man about town"; an urban explorer; a connoisseur of the street. In 1935, Walter Benjamin, in "Paris: the capital of the nineteenth century", drew on the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, and cast "le boulevardier" (or le flaneur) as an emblematic archetype of urban, modern experience.
"Le boulevardier" is also a great cocktail, created by famed bartender Harry McElhone in Paris in the 1920s, where he set up "Harry’s New York Bar", having left the USA because of Prohibition. The drink was the favoured tipple of another Yankee ex-pat, Erskine Gwynne. He was a member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family, who was a fixture of the Paris social scene and a true "man about town". Gwynne edited a monthly magazine that has been described as "a sort of Parisian New Yorker" named "The Boulevardier", which gave its name to Harry's creation.
It is under that name that the recipe appeared in in Harry’s 1927 bar guide, "Barflies and Cocktails".
The cocktail went on to inspire the Negroni (which replaces the bourbon with gin) 20 years later.
