The Chair of Internal Auditing held by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Marc Eulerich at the Mercator School of Management (University of Duisburg-Essen) is currently the only university chair in Germany with a focus on internal auditing in research and teaching. Based on an endowed junior professorship established by the German Institute of Internal Auditors (DIIR) in 2011-2016, the chair was founded with the aim to create a link between science and practice that would be of interest to students. A focus on practical knowledge transfer and insight into current research should enable students to prepare themselves optimally for their career entry and to discover the exciting field of internal auditing. In the context of the inter/national research projects of the chair, basic research on internal auditing is to be carried out as well as practice-related problem solutions are to be developed, which deepen the scientific discussion in the context of good corporate governance and reveal the meaningfulness of inter audit functions. Numerous cooperation partners in Germany and abroad, as well as a broad spectrum of methods form the basis for publications, conferences and projects. Lectures with in/direct reference to internal auditing are offered for both bachelor and master students, which are intended to provide the most practical and at the same time scientific qualification possible for a successful career start. In addition, the chair supervises final theses/seminar papers on the topics of internal auditing and corporate governance. Since 2017 the chair has been part of the "Internal Auditing Education Partnership" program of the Institute of Internal Auditors and reached the highest of the program's three levels in November 2020. For then on, the chair has been allowed to call itself a "Center for Internal Auditing Excellence", which only eleven universities worldwide have achieved so far.
