This business is dedicated to the mariners, lightkeepers and lighthouses representing the rich maritime history of Michigan. Through our social contacts, photos and products we strive to encourage people everywhere (but especially Michiganders) to take note of and to visit the lighthouses of Michigan. I didn’t intentionally start out to photograph lighthouses but somewhere along the way it just became a thing that I did. When I wanted to travel not too far away from home I would look at the map and see all the lighthouse icons on the Great Lakes and decide to go there. Eventually, having visited and photographed many of the lights and having gained an interest in the history and value of these icons of the Great Lakes I made the decision to find all of Michigan’s lighthouses and photograph every one of them. So many of them had been in disrepair and in danger of “extinction”. Many had already been torn down never to be seen again by an interested public. I used to dream of photographing endangered species and though I chose different directions perhaps it was the desire to “preserve” that held the lure for me to continue my expeditions. Getting to the 80 lighthouses that were accessible by car was a pretty easy task. Time consuming to be sure but all I had to do was follow the map and head in the direction of the lighthouse that I wanted to see. I was super excited when I thought I had completed getting to all of the lights until I learned that were 50 more that I had to photograph that were not accessible by car. They were the island and crib lights that would require the use of a boat (or in some cases a plane). This is where, in my mind, the ultimate adventure would begin. I didn’t own a boat so I had to figure out how to get out on the water. Long story short, I figured it out and the adventures were amazing. The people that I met along the way were helpful and kind and pleasant to be with, quite fantastic.
