Luke’s FastBreaks is a nonprofit that makes colorful medical port shirts that replace hospital gowns for children fighting cancer. The medical port shirts enable children/teens to feel comfortable during their hospital stay while boosting their self-esteem by allowing self-expression with the different color options and designs. The medical port shirts also restore their privacy—something that's often lacking in the traditional hospital gown. They meet hospital standards and are approved by the Association of Child Life.
9-year-old Luke Lange started the idea for the Luke's FastBreaks medical port shirts during his fight with cancer. Luke said the hospital gown made him “feel more sick”—he just wanted to feel like a normal 3rd grader. So, Luke and his parents had snap tape sewed into both sides of his t-shirts, allowing easy access to ports, IVs, and lines while also giving Luke the ability to be in an outfit that looked and felt normal (https://youtu.be/9gIqW99Rba0).
Luke wore his new shirts to treatment at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Soon after, other children in the hospital started asking where they could get a port shirt, too, so the nonprofit Luke’s FastBreaks was founded (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeCHhokYTDs). The sizes range from toddler to youth to Adult XXL, allowing every child (and teen) in hospitals to find a shirt that fits properly. Individual donors and companies help sponsor the medical port shirts.
Luke’s FastBreaks has shipped over 50k medical port shirts and 7500 care packages to children with cancer all over the United States.
