The seed for Mabee Baby was planted when the founder Dawn Mabee became pregnant in 2011. Deciding not to discover the sex of the baby she went out in search of gender neutral styles that met her needs. Dawn was disappointed to discover very few options. Every shop was divided in two by stereotypical gendered kid cliches. At the same time it was becoming clear to Dawn, a fashion arts graduate, that the problems of fast fashion were serious and needed to be addressed.
After her maternity leave Dawn began work at a small high end women’s clothing label as a sample cutter. During her three years in this position she was frequently conflicted by the amount of fabric waste generated. On days off Dawn would design and make her new child special outfits. She discovered local textile recycling initiatives and loved being inspired by the varied fabrics that would come and go.
One day while shopping at Our Social Fabric, Dawn spotted some sweet flannel and velveteen. It’s not remembered how the idea appeared, but that material became the first Mabee Baby robe and set a path for the way forward. The hobby became the side hustle in 2018 and with the help of funding and a mentor through Futurpreneur Mabee Baby was officially born.
Every year since has seen obstacles and milestones, Dawn’s original inspiration of better fashion for kids always pulling her onward.
Today and into the future Mabee Baby will always stand for quality, unisex, eco loungewear that goes beyond the kid cliches. Modern, nostalgic designs made from a mix of upcycled and salvaged materials that can be loved and enjoyed for years to come.
